3. Amnesia: The Dark Descent

Amnesia: The Dark Descent is one of those games that is all about the atmosphere and sound. Sure it has scary monsters that will chase you non-stop until you are out of their site, but if you listen to the messed up audio and sound effects while having headphones on, you will be very very afraid. So much so that you will probably have to mentally prepare yourself to beat it. If you want to have a very spooky Halloween this game is for you.

2. Resident Evil VII

Resident Evil VII is a return to basics kind of survival horror game and a huge departure from games like Resident Evil 5 and 6. It’s also the first game in the series that is first person. The game knows what it is and knows what it wants to do, and that is to scare you. It is a return to the first Resident Evil where you are exploring this unknown residence that is filled with traps and mystery. While playing you are very limited in your supplies as you explore and try to survive the eerie Baker Residence, as if being hunted by the crazed Baker family wasn’t enough. This game has everything a spooky survival horror game should have, and it is one that should be played on Halloween.

1. P.T.

This game is probably the hardest to get your hands on as it was only on the Playstation Store a short time before being removed and if you already have it you’ve already played it but that’s alright because each playthrough is just as disturbing as the first playthrough. While technically not a game but instead a “playable teaser” for what was going to be the new Silent Hill game, Silent Hills. Silent Hills which was in development by Hideo Kojima of Metal Gear Solid fame never saw release though, so this is what we have.

What made this game so spooky was the fact that you would venture through a hallway loop of the same hallway over and over again solving cryptic puzzles. Each loop though would slowly make the hallway darker and more unsettling. Not to mention the fact that you would have to avoid Lisa, a ghost of the woman who used to live in the house whose hallway you are going through. It was very hard to predict when she would appear behind you and begin to chow down on you, as it appeared to almost happen at random, but when it did happen it was truly frightening, This game is the perfect game to play on Halloween if you have access to it, and if you play it a few words of advice… Don’t look behind you.
